So Tryanuary is over for 2018 but it will definitely return for 2019 as we have seen plenty of action and have even heard of a few breweries beating their profits in December… mad eh! We thought that we’d sum up the events that we checked out!..

It was just a flying visit, but we got hold of Panic Flip (Pale Ale) and B14 IPA - both were fantastic, but the B14 IPA was especially good!

We’d never visited the city before, let alone visited one of its pubs, so we couldn’t wait to embark on this craft beer journey! We met up with the Beer More Social crew at Stoke-on-Trent station, grabbed a cab and took the short 15 minute journey to Newcastle-Under-Lyme….First stop was The Ten Green Bottles Co, situated right in the heart of Newcastle town centre. The place looked like a cafe/ bottle shop from the outside – quaint, and with plenty of bottles in the window. Inside there were plenty of options to take away, but out back lay some chilled out sofas and a cracking range of 10 taps on the go, serving brews that ranged from relatively local to those from afar. This place had a fair bit of cask, with Weal Ales hosting most of the taps, accompanied by a couple of guest ales and about 4 keg lines. This place was FULL to the brim with bottles from far and wide. This was accompanied with some cask and keg, so you could enjoy inside or take a few bottles for the ride home! They had the Caramel Fudge Imperial Stout - Brouwerij Kees, it was SERIOUSLY good!Our next stop took us to Hopinn, which was the Potteries pub of the year 2015/2016 & 2017/2018 and has also featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the last two years. If we’re honest, by this time we’d had a fair few GOOD brews and were in some desperate need of some food, which made this place perfect as there was a cracking pizza place opposite called Klay Pizzeria & Bar. The bar lets you bring the pizza in and there are even some great vegetarian and vegan options too! BottleCraft is a craft beer/ real ale bottle shop with over 200 brews available, plus a bar with keg beers and two cask! It had been a long but fine day, and this place was the perfect spot to finish off before the short-ish walk back to the station. Once we had warmed up our palates, we headed down to the incredibly funky Rock & Roll Brewhouse.This place hosts their own fantastic in-house brews and is complimented by psychedelic colours, cool decor and lighting. After we’d had a bit of Instant Calmer and Voodoo Mild, we were off to our next stop… Burning Soul Brewery!These guys need no introduction, after their epic gig night last year, which Catherine also organised as part of Birmingham Beer Week. Burning Soul also won The Thirsty Games at Indy Man Beer Con last year, which well and truly put them on the beer map. There were plenty of cracking brews on the go, including their EPIC barrel-aged coconut porter.Getting a little bit merry, we then hit The Wolf who were celebrating their birthday weekend and had a terrific trio of Blackjack, Burning Soul and Twisted Barrel on the go!.. Twisted Barrel’s New England IPA really hit the spot.The night was getting on a bit, but it wasn’t over yet, a quick stop by Two Towers Brewery for their Fellowship that tastes not too dissimilar to violet sweets.Then we were on our way to our final destination, Tilt, and there was only one thing on our minds… Founders Brewing CBS - it was EPIC! It was the first time this has reached the UK and the perfect way to wrap up this fantastic Birmingham craft beer trail!

We had a fair few, Green Duck (Ricochet), the Dig Brew Co and Ar Suil colab (Seen Tom’s Snapchat), Punchline (Why the Big Paws?), plus Burning Soul’s colab IPA with Odyssey and Glasshouse was still on. All were fantastic brews!

To be fair it had kicked off the night before and a few of the brews had actually gone by the time we hit it up on the Saturday night… not surprising, really! As this followed on from the Burning Soul Showcase, there were plenty of familiar (merry) faces around the place and the party was really getting started. At 8.8%, the Beavertown & Verdant Brewing colab “Shut Up and Play the Hits” DIPA was dangerously good!

This was a record for Paul, as the tap room was busier than ever. The Middle Feast were keeping bellies full with their Middle Eastern inspired kebabs and there was a point where it looked like they may just run out of beer! But there is no rest for the wicked and we couldn’t hang around as we had a movie night to run later on in the evening…

We had arranged a movie night in Two Towers in aid of Parkinson’s UK & Parkinson’s research. The film was “Beer Hunter: The Movie”, a documentary on legendary beer writer Michael Jackson who sadly suffered from the disease. The night was a great success and the event was really complimented by some cracking brews from Anchor Brewing! We just want to say a big thank you to everyone that came along and supported the event, Two Towers for hosting and also a cheers to JR (the filmmaker) for letting us show the movie - it was really inspiring! We are hoping to do something similar again very soon!

So what in fact happened to the January blues or Dryanuary…? Great independent breweries, brilliant bars and fantastic beer!
