Birmingham Brewing Company Moves to a Bigger Site!

Back in March 2017, we went to visit Birmingham Brewing Company, the first Brewery to set up on the now renowned Stirchley Beer Mile. At the time they were just a small five-barrel brewery with one staff member, owner and head brewer Paul Harwood. The brewery then went on to have its first taproom opening in May of that year, which was a complete hit. Since then, plenty has gone on, they’ve brought on more staff including head brewer Matt Buist, expanded brewing capacity and even added a canning line,all while churning out beer like there’s no tomorrow! That’s why in July they made the bold move to a bigger unit, which took a little longer than expected, as Paul told us.“We got the keys in July, a couple of days later we discovered that we had a leak and the unit flooded, so we had to cancel all of our contractors until it was fixed. It was a bit of a blow straight out but in hindsight it was a good thing that we actually found out about it before we moved, as it didn’t ruin any of the new refurb and we could carry on brewing at the old unit. So it worked out quite well but it did delay us by about a month.”The new permanent taproom, which is now open to the public every Friday 4pm-10pm and Saturday 12pm - 10.30pm, is definitely a step above the original; with a fantastic tiled bar, benches and a big glass window that lets you view where all of the magic takes place! The ambient filament bulbs add to the atmosphere, which doesn’t really need much of a boost as the people of Stirchley and beyond provide a real buzz. There’s a fridge with beers to go, along with four cask lines of real ale and 14 keg lines that include a wide range of craft beer, cider and natural wines. There’s plenty of new brews too, as Paul explained.“We have loads of new beers and lines, we’ve been brewing them for the taproom since August, with an American Pale Ale, more versions of Hazy Brummie, Trappist Ale, different lagers and some old favourites like Ginger Brummie and Confused Brummie coming back.”Paul has plenty of plans for next year, with more opening times, events and a couple of plans under wraps.
